Perpetous Dreamer ”Ballet is a man” Maurice Béjart. Classical ballet is the most constructed and artificial body system ever invented. Every movement is carefully worked out, day after day - to give the spectator the pleasure of a body in total control and a body that can express the most sensual and the most other worldly experiences. I am interested in this artificial body language as a means for our construction of gender and masculinity. I am also interested in the role of the classical artist. The dancer has to work painstakingly every day to keep the body in control. The principal dancer has to dance parts that have already been made famous by someone else. On the one hand you are part of a tradition on the other hand you have to reinvent every small gesture to make a difference. In “Perpetous Dreamer”, will I perform (and reinvent) all the classical major ballerina parts from Odette/Odile in Swanlake to the sleepwalker in George Balanchines La Sonambula. I will perform in the nude. It will all come out in a photo/text series, a video installation and a small book publication. |
